Molecular

My sister Laura and I thought it might be fun to decorate some of our handmade gifts this year with a little molecular embroidery. We decided to make up a little quickie free pattern for everyone with our two favorite molecules - caffeine & water. Water is much smaller to stitch, of course - and either design would be cute on bottle cozies, bags, coasters, etc...

Molecular
water of life...

For the insulated java jacket above, I traced a paper one from the coffee shop and added about an inch on all sides. It overlaps in the back with velcro, and is fully reversible! Here is a great tutorial on Flickr. The smaller caffeine pattern fits nicely, and my sister will get this in the mail soon for helping us all out :)

Ok, so that is the coolest idea ever !! One of my BILs is a Science Teacher, and a caffeine addict, something w/ this embroidered on it would be PERFECT.
You rock in all your nerdiness ;-)

OOh... I love that. Since I am NOT crafty, are you going to be selling that (or other coffee cozies) on your Etsy site? My sister loves her Starbucks every day and I need to give her one of these for Christmas!

I love it! Bean, thanks so much for sharing. I picked up a 5-pack of $20 Starbucks cards at Costco for only $79 last week, and this will be the perfect gift to go with each card!

I think this is a good idea. And using molecules, certain ones anyway, can help one's creative energy get way and the hell jazzed up. Which is fun.

This is so cool - I love this! What a great place to do a small embroidery design.

I just love this. I've been wanting to make some coffee cup cozies. Maybe this will give me a jumpstart.

I just responded to your comment on my blog, but thought I'd copy it here:

I agree. Now, I didn't know Hitler personally (or any psychopath/serial killers) -- maybe they were lovely sweet little babies. All I know is what I've heard of them in later life. It makes you wonder, doesn't it? I very much hope that everyone is "fixable."

that is "sew" darn cute! i might have to borrow your pattern, but i don't have a clue how to embroider the molecular structure. unfortunate, since i have a coffee drinking chemist for a father!

Nice to *meet you* and thank you for sharing this cool tutorial... I really like the theme!

I love this pattern! I wanted to embroider the word 'sweet' and a glucose (sugar) molecule on some baby booties because my old high school chemistry teacher just had twins. I couldn't figure out how to design the molecule to look decent. This is just the thing!

Very nice, thank you! I'm going to make one for my brother who works in the molecular biology department at a university.

Great minds must think alike! I've been making and selling caffeine coffee sleeves for months! The irony! If only I'd have a tutorial :)
